On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

• Discuss the nature of physical knowledge, measurement of physical quantities and the use of units in describing the laws of nature.
• Describe the physics of motion and forces (kinematics & dynamics) using an algebraic approach and vectorial description of motion.
• Discuss the basic properties of matter and thermal physics.
• Solve simple numerical problems relevant to fundamental mechanics and thermodynamics.
• Carry out relevant laboratory experiments to demonstrate and test physical principles and report the results.

• 24 lecture hours; 10 laboratory hours; 10 tutorial hours; 77 independent study hours, 2 Class Tests hours.

• Penalties: Labs and Class Tests cannot be repeated., in general. Late submission of assignments will be subject to a penalty of 10% of the assessment grade for each day (or part thereof) overdue.

Course Text:

* Cutnell & Johnson, Physics, 4th Edition or later, Wiley 1998 – this is an algebra based textbook.

* Laboratory Manuals and a laboratory notebook are provided at a cost of around €20.

Reference Text:

* Serway, Physics for Scientists & Engineers, Saunders College Publishing – this is a calculus based textbook and is recommended for students who have strong mathematics – Serway is a book that you could hold for life for reference – any edition will suffice.
