Module ENGAGING LITERATURE

Module code: EN6001
Credits: 15
Semester: Year-Long
Department: ENGLISH
International: No
Overview Overview

In this module students will address the dynamic and volatile relationships between literature, criticism, society and politics. Students will engage with both literary texts and literary and cultural theory in order to deepen their understanding of how the literary configures and is shaped by the worlds it inhabits. Through a series of case studies students will examine the ways in which literature can be understood in its moment. Students will be expected to acquire critical tools and concepts which enable a deep engagement with literature at postgraduate level. Case studies will draw on the range of expertise in the Department and will ask students to re-imagine the role and construction of literature from a variety of critical and historical viewpoints. The aims of this module include: allowing students to examine their understanding of what ‘literature’ is; to enhance their ability to formulate questions about the relationship between texts and contexts; and to become more adept at critically positioning their own voices in regards to both literary texts and criticism.
