• 1. Analyse magnetic circuits.
• 2. Describe and explain the operation of simple motors and generators
• 3. Analyze simple problems relevant to DC machines.
• 4. Analyze simple problems relevant to transformers.
• 5. Analyze simple propagation problems related to general EM fields.
• 6. Apply the EM principles to practically solve various problems in a lab setting.

• Learning outcomes 1–6 are assessed in the end of term examination. Learning outcomes 2 and 4 are assessed in the laboratory sessions. Additionally the laboratories are designed to encourage teamwork and collaborative problem solving. The assignment assesses learning outcome 7.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? No
• Pass 40% - students are not required to pass the written and continuous components separately – an overall pass mark of 40% is acceptable.
• Penalties: Missed laboratories cannot be repeated, in general. Late submission of assignments will be subject to a penalty of 10% of the assessment grade for each day(or part thereof) overdue.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• The continuous assessment mark is carried forward to the Autumn examinations as there is no facility for repeating practical examinations.
