Module HISTORY OF EDUCATION

Module code: EDM614
Credits: 2.5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Anthony Malone (EDUCATION), Dr Thomas Walsh (EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

The objective of this module is to explore the key contextual factors and milestones that have shaped the current education system in Ireland. Using an inquiry-based and thematic approach, students will explore the historical policy and legislative documents that underpinned the education system and reflect on the impact of our history on current educational provisions. The module cross references relevant international developments to facilitate comparative analyses.

The module is designed to encourage students to develop a holistic view of education as a practice and to enable them to understand the current education research, policy and practice landscape in its historical context. Challenging students’ own assumptions and beliefs and supporting them to articulate their own stances and perspectives across a range of issues (such as such as the purposes of education, patronage and management, equality, inclusion, democracy, gender and assessment) are core to the module. Extensive discussion on and critique of key readings, theories and historical documentation are central features of the inquiry-based approach of the module.
