Module INCLUSIVE EDUCATION (SEN)

Module code: EDM611
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Angela Rickard (EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module will help future teachers understand and critically reflect on the principles and practices of education that embrace the diversity (cognitive, emotional, physical, and linguistic) of learners in the classroom. Student teachers will develop their ability to identify and apply developmentally appropriate practice and lesson design to respond to the learning needs of pupils who exhibit varying competencies and challenges. The module will also increase awareness that additional needs occur across a continuum. Students will be aware of the various supports, services and interventions available in keeping with the continuum of support, as well as the educational legislation that supports them.
Over the course of the module, student teachers will explore the meaning and importance of inclusion for contemporary educational contexts. The lecturer and students will examine the roles and responsibilities of the inclusive practitioner and identify strategies for responding to established and emerging differences in how pupils learn. The various lectures in this module will cover central topics and issues including: Universal Design for Learning; the continuum of support; differentiation in planning, instruction and assessment; understanding student differences (cognitive, emotional, physical and linguistic); practical and concrete strategies for classroom practice; and the appropriate use of ICT to support diverse learners. Attention will also be given to effective collaboration with in-class support professionals.
