Module BECOMING A TEACHER 1 (POLICY, CURRICULUM AND LAW)

Module code: EDM608
Credits: 5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Thomas Walsh (EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

The objective of this module is to support students to be more critically aware of the key policy, curriculum and legislative frameworks informing their work as teachers and the wider education system. It links strongly with the key elements of the Conceptual Framework for ITE by situating the teacher’s personal and professional role and identity in the wider social, political and cultural context of their work.
The module will comprise inputs and discussions on key curriculum, legislative and policy frameworks and discourses (both national and international) that inform the current education system in Ireland. A particular focus will be placed on the close reading and interrogation of key legislative, policy and curriculum documents in the Irish context. This will be framed both theoretically and conceptually within the extant literature. Policy makers from key departments and agencies will be invited as guest lecturers to illuminate students’ understanding of the curriculum and policy development process.
