The objective of this module is to provide student teachers with opportunities to develop skills in lesson planning, teaching and assessment in a structured, incremental, supportive and challenging way. In addition to the direct teaching of classes, student teachers will learn about and contribute to the wider life of the school and experience the rhythm of school life by engaging in wider school activities as detailed in the Teaching Council’s School Placement Guidelines (2013). Through reflective work and professional conversations with treoirithe and others, student teachers will develop professionally relevant skills such as communication, time management, teamwork and the effective use of educational technology. A particular focus will be placed on the ‘Personal’ and ‘Professional’ dimensions of the student teacher’s identity within the Department’s Ethical-Relational Conceptual Framework for Initial Teacher Education. This module will act as a fulcrum for the programme, providing a context for practical, professional and conceptual aspects of the PME to inform one another.
Following a period of observation in the placement school, student teachers will teach classes on their own and increase the number of teaching classes in semester 2. Each student teacher will be expected to collaborate closely with one or more treoirithe. Opportunities for discussion about observations, teaching and school-based activities will be provided at university-based tutorials as well as one-to-one professional conversations with a tutor. Student teachers are expected to behave professionally both inside and outside the school, in line with the Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers (Teaching Council, 2016).
