Module code: EDF687
Credits: 7.5
Semester: Year-Long
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Prof. Marie McLoughlin (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

This module introduces students to reflective practice by inviting them to systematically review their learning experiences to date, their current experience in school and educational settings. They will be required to think critically about their educational ideas, values and concepts and locate the emergence of these ideas in their own educational philosophy. Students will be invited to review what they value in education. They will be introduced to key contributors and to the notion of reflective practice such as Dewey, Schön, Brookfield, Mezirow, Zwozdiak-Myers and Moon.

The module will focus on the development of professional practice using reflection to challenge self and support best practice and examine one’s ‘Self’ as a professional practitioner. Student skills in reflective writing will be developed through the use of creative arts-based methods of reflection, journal writing and the creation of a portfolio. The use of appropriate reflective frameworks for reflection-on-practice and the consideration of new ways of thinking, learning and improving practice will be examined. Students will be encouraged to apply reflective frameworks to their practice and examine how reflection can be integrated as a lifelong process within their professional practice.
