Teacher enquiry is the systematic, intentional study of one's own professional practice, which is a key Froebelian principle. This module will explore the development of understandings of action research in its many forms within educational settings. The module introduces students to the concept of educational enquiry and, in particular, the principles and practices of action research. It is designed to provide students with a critical awareness of the central theories, philosophies, approaches and concepts employed in educational research. This will provide a foundation for their understanding and application of practitioner action research and the dialectical relationships between policy, pedagogy and practice. Students will be introduced to the range of philosophical and theoretical ideas and debates underpinning educational and social science research, including exploring in some depth the key technical, philosophical and theoretical concepts and terms used in current research reports and debates, and the ethical and political dimensions of research. The relationships between theory and practice will be explored along with the nature of knowledge, evidence-informed and evidence-based research. The module will allow students to investigate their own values, norms and beliefs around research. Case studies of Action Research projects within a variety of contexts will be examined. The policy environment will also be examined to provide an awareness of the wider environment in which schools operate. The implications of Froebelian principles in modern contexts will be explored.
