Credits: 20
Semester: Year-Long
Department: EDUCATION
International: No

Overview Overview

School placement is an integral element of initial teacher education. School placement on the PME is of critical importance and provides student teachers with opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge and develop skills in lesson planning, development and evaluation. Over the course of the two-year PME, student teachers will undertake placement in at least two different schools. It is the responsibility of the student teacher to source each school placement.

In the second year of the PME, student teachers have an extended school-based experience and spend three days per week (Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays) on placement from late August until late May. There is an expectation that following a period of observation in the placement school, student-teachers will teach 8 classes per week in Semester 1 and 10 classes per week in semester 2. The number of classes is reduced for student teachers teaching one-hour classes. This should involve teaching at both the junior cycle and senior cycle level. Student teachers are expected to be in their placement school for entire school days and in addition to teaching classes, they are expected to engage in and contribute as fully as possible to the wider life of the school. Student teachers are generally university-based on Thursdays and Fridays.

Each student teacher will be expected to work closely with one or more co-operating teachers. Opportunities for discussion about observations, teaching and school-based activities will be provided at university-based tutorials. Student teachers are expected to behave professionally both inside and outside the school, in line with the Teaching Council’s Code of Professional Conduct for Teachers (Teaching Council, 2016).

The student teacher will be supported and assessed through at least three visits during the year. These placement visits will be undertaken by at least two different tutors. Further support will normally be provided by co-operating teachers and partner schools.
