| | This module aims at training and assessing Computer Science research students in technical, scientific, communication and general research skills in the first year of the CS PhD programme. This will include a set of supervisor led assignments as milestones for the student’s PhD. Examples could include replication of state of the art techniques (SoTA), application of SoTA techniques to a new problem or dataset, etc. The module will also involve an important focus on learning and applying the Open Science (FAIR) principles of CS research. Students will lead the organisation of events as a team during the academic year (e.g. October Poster presentation, June workshop presentation, seminars, etc) and ensure their training meets expected doctoral outcomes https://www.myphd.ie/doctoral-outcomes.
Assessment:
- Research. Assignments A1 and A2 in each term to be submitted as defined by supervisor (e.g. literature review, github repo, technical paper, etc.). A1/A2 can be aligned with project deliverables on which student is funded. The supervisor will be responsible for providing timely feedback to the student on their submissions.
- Open Science. In Term 1, students should complete Open Science Modules "The ethos of Open Science" and "Open tools and Resources". In Term 2, students should complete Open Science Module "Open Data". Course content of these modules are published at [DOI:10.5281/zenodo.10161526] and are made available online at https://roznn.github.io/OpenScience/ .
- Other: submission of forms (e.g. GSF1, GSF2) as defined by course coordinator, submission of other certificates as defined by supervisor and funding agency (e.g. Epigeum, EPE). Organisation and participation in events as defined by course coordinator (e.g. October Poster presentation, June workshop presentation, etc.). |
