The city of Rome is often referred to as the ‘Eternal City’ and this label, first used in the 1st century BC, confirms the enduring quality of its historical and cultural legacy. The Romans had a profound influence on the development of Europe: the languages, architectural styles, religions, and legal and political institutions of many countries were influenced by this ancient civilization. This module provides an introduction to Roman history and society, and focuses on key topics for the study of Ancient Rome as an eternal city; from its transition from Republic to Empire, students will evaluate its political and legal system, its social structure, and its artistic and literary developments.
