On successful completion of the module, students should be able to:

Identify and interpret the core online sources and locate repository and archival sources for family history research including census, civil registration, and church and land records.

Discover the evidential value of historical printed sources such as newspapers and directories, testamentary and burial records, institutional, military and occupational records to enhance research leads and contexts.

Identify and locate emigration records and discover the value of overseas sources to Irish genealogy.

Evaluate and interpret primary and secondary sources, their accuracy and relevance, and the strengths and weaknesses of different classes of records.

Place family history in the context of local, community and national narratives.

Develop research methodology skills to research effectively, collate and organise findings, construct a family tree and write a family history narrative.

Overcome problems with a lack of sources by using substitutes, contextual alternatives and innovative research techniques.
