Is the past ever really the past, or can its echoes continue to shape our present environment in various and unexpected ways? The Greeks were one of the most advanced civilizations of the ancient world and their innovations resonate all around us: from government and legal systems, artistic and cultural developments, to the use of language and critical thinking. This module introduces students to these various facets of Ancient Greek society in order to promote a clearer understanding of modern politics and culture in the Western world. Students will evaluate this iconic period of ancient history, and investigate its ongoing influence into the twenty-first century.

* Stones that Speak: Greek Art & Architecture in Civic Spaces
* Greek Politics from Aristocracy to Democracy
* Power to the People: the Athenian Assembly & the Lawcourts
* It’s all Greek to Me: the Power of Language & Rhetoric
* Greek Philosophy from the Pre-Socratics to Aristotle
* Greek Science & Technology
* Entertaining the Masses: Competition & Sport
* Festival Culture: Greek Drama
