This module combines the two strands of the BA Local Studies/Community Studies for New Students as an introduction to programmes. Students will complete both elements of the module before progressing on to the degree stream of their choice in Semester 2. The experience gained on participating in both modules allows students to gain valuable insights into the other stream that will be of benefit when they opt for Common Modules later in the degree.

Unit 1:
Module Content: Local Studies
• What is local history? Why local studies?
• Concepts of community and locality, definitions and approaches.
• Selected source materials: documentary; oral; visual: maps, photographs,
built fabric; historical literature. Principal repositories; catalogues and
finding aids. Primary vs. secondary sources.
• Questioning and critically appraising sources.
• Presenting local studies: ethics and academic rigour; referencing,
bibliographies, writing conventions.
• Case study: Maynooth or another suitable location.

Introductory sessions in:
• Maps, landscapes and the history of place.
• Archaeology: the earliest evidence for place and community.
• Manifestations of place and community in writing: the Irish literary tradition.

Unit 2:
Module Content: Community Studies
• Introduction to Community Studies
• Definitions of community
• Models of community development
• Diversity & difference within Irish communities
• The impact of social change on Irish community life.

• Introductory Sessions in:
• Youth & community work
• Anthropology of local communities
• Sociological perspectives on local communities
