Module INTRODUCTION TO INTERCULTURAL STUDIES

Module code: ALIS614
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: SCHOOL OF MODERN LANGUAGES
International: Yes
Coordinator: Dr David García León (SPANISH)
Overview Overview

This module provides an overview of Intercultural Studies, an interdisciplinary field that aims to understand how language, culture and communication intersect in the context of (inter)cultural encounters. The module begins by exploring definitions of culture, language, identity, competence, multiculturalism, interculturality, and cultural awareness, and by providing an overview of some of the main approaches to Intercultural Competence. Building on such foundations, the module continues by focusing on the connection between Intercultural (Communicative) Competence, and language teaching and learning . The final section of the module provides empirical case studies that illustrate the development of Intercultural Competence in the foreign language learning and teaching environment. Given the phenomenological nature of interculturalism, this module values both theory and experiential knowledge.
