This module offers an overview of the Spanish-speaking world with a focus on the political and social issues related to the dynamics of bilingual and multilingual societies. The course begins by presenting some key concepts in the fields of bilingualism. Later, it moves into analysing the social aspects of multilingual and bilingual societies such as the relationship between language, power, education, and identity. Students will then explore the main sociolinguistic characteristics of multi/bilingual communities in Hispanoamérica, Spain, and the United States.
