Policy analysis is the systematic evaluation of alternative solutions (policies) that are put in place or proposed to tackle social problems or achieve social goals. This module is designed to address two skill sets.
First, to enable students develop the understandings and skills for policy analysis. This module critically examines how policy problems are represented and how problem streams, policy streams and political streams interact. Also, it presents a step-by-step guide to: identifying specific policies, examining the values involved, identifying stakeholders and decision-makers, assessing the resources needed to implement a policy, and measuring its effects on real life. Second, this module aims to enable students develop relevant research skills for policy analysis such as defining and designing a policy research project; reviewing literature; framing policy research questions; writing a policy analysis proposal; exploring different prototypes for policy analysis projects.
