This module teaches an overview of key design movements from the turn of the 20th century to date. It draws of a range of different design examples from designed objects, buildings, cars and fashion, to explore the movements origins and cultural, social and economic influencing factors. From this, students will learn that design is evolutionary, not revolutionary. By understanding the history of previous design movements, students will be learn to predict future design, business and social trends for impactful product, service and business solutions. Topics include: The Industrial Revolution and its impact on society; The Arts & Crafts movement as a social movement; Stylistic and decorative movements of Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Modernism and Bauhaus, Post Modernism in design; The changing face of design in consumer society, Design in popular and youth culture, and Forecasting design for the future.
