	Overview
	This module examines the legal context for global migration, with a particular focus on international refugee law, universal rights norms, and the impact of the European Convention on Human Rights. Students will use prism of migration to critically assess the evolution of universal human rights and the erosion of state sovereignty in the sphere of human rights protection. It analyses contemporary trends in global migratory movements and introduces students to key concepts of Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Law, at the domestic, European and international levels. It questions the extent of fundamental rights protection for non-citizens under universal human rights law and the ECHR. It explores the special legal regime for refugee protection in international and EU law and scrutinises the legal definition of a 'refugee'. The module traces the development of the rights of migrant workers in international law and also introduces students to the debates surrounding legal responses to irregular migration. Any aspect of this module may change in any given academic year, subject to the discretion of the module lecturer.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Outline and analyse core debates on migration and the law, both orally and in writing; Describe and critically assess key concepts in international and EU refugee law; Describe and critically assess the legal framework for the protection of fundamental rights of migrants, encompassing domestic, European and international law; Critically evaluate and discuss the impact of the ECHR in the field of migration; Apply human rights law to immigration scenarios.
