Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: SCHOOL OF LAW AND CRIMINOLOGY

Overview Overview

The response to crime since the mid-1990s has been characterised in many developed countries by an emphasis on prison expansion. This module will seek to understand the complex role of the prison in contemporary society by exploring some of the policy dilemmas that confront prison systems everywhere. By examining contemporary penal policy debates including prisoners’ rights, students will develop a critical understanding of prison governance, law and policy in comparative perspective. Particular attention will be paid to prison conditions, penological regimes, international human rights standards and oversight mechanisms.
