	Overview
	This module will focus on contemporary film of the German-speaking countries. Following a brief introduction to reading film, particular emphasis will be placed on how contemporary film both reflects and feeds into debates about contemporary culture and society in the German-speaking countries. **This 5-ECTS credit module may be used as part of the engagement with texts required for accreditation by the Teaching Council of Ireland. All applications submitted for Teaching Council accreditation are, however, subject to the Teaching Council’s internal evaluation processes.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify and explain key aspects of historical, societal and cultural development in the German-speaking countries in the 20th and 21st century. Summarise in broad terms developments in film from the 1990s to the present-day, and analyse closely a selection of films from this period. Interpret films through close reading and contextualisation. Interpret and explain in English and/or in German key terms introduced in the module, using examples where appropriate. Express in writing core content and ideas, including relevant terminology, in English and/or German. Evaluate critically secondary literature. Research, develop and articulate in writing a balanced and well-structured argument.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Continuous Assessment marks are carried forward to the Autumn. Contact course Coordinator early in July for repeat course essay topics.

	Pre-Requisites
	Since substantial parts of this module will be delivered in German and parts of the Continuous Assessment will also test German language skills, an advanced knowledge of German is required.
