	Overview
	In this module, students will reflect critically on the French language as an object of inquiry. Over the course of the semester, the module will offer an overview of the language�s structure through the study of its semantics, lexis, syntax, morphology and phonology. With its emphasis on usage, the module provides insight into major sites of variation as well as normative structures. It will contribute to the improvement of students� understanding of how French works and provide a foundation for future study in linguistics.

It will contribute to the improvement of students� understanding of how French works and provide a foundation for future study in linguistics.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Summarise in broad terms key concepts related to language structure, including phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, lexis, and semantics; Describe the patterns of the normative sound system of French; Identify major sites of variation in the pronunciation of contemporary French; Apply knowledge of French phonology to improve their accuracy in normative spoken French; Apply knowledge of contrasts between written and spoken forms in French to improve their own expression in various situations.

Could the result of this module be capped? Attendance requirement not being met. This does not apply to the Autumn repeat examinations.
Penalties: Late submission of assessed coursework or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed coursework or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or compelling reasons will not be penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate). Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a medical certificate).
