This module examines the role and function of the financial system in the overall economy. We examine key concepts such as the measurement of living standards, economic growth, inflation and savings at an aggregate level and analyse how these concepts influence the financial system. We explain the role of money in the economy and how Central Banks implement policy through the management of money and interest rates. We investigate the savings versus consumption decision of individuals and provide an overview of portfolio management. Topics include investment decisions; risk and return; how firms are financed; derivative securities and risk management; the nature and evolution of financial markets. Interactive learning, using Bloomberg Market Concepts, allows students to complete Bloomberg modules in Economics Indicators.
