• Describe the fundamental principles of electricity and magnetism.
• Discuss the techniques required to analyze simple electric circuits.
• Analyze the behaviour of sound and light in various physical situations using the theory of vibrations and waves.
• Describe the operation of a variety of optical instruments using geometrical optics.
• Apply wave-particle duality to the study of a range of physical phenomena at the atomic and sub-atomic level.
• Contrast the classical and quantum mechanical pictures of the atom/nucleus particularly in regard to atomic hydrogen and nuclear decay.
• Solve simple numerical problems relevant to fundamental electricity & magnetism, optics & waves and modern physics.
• Carry out relevant laboratory experiments to demonstrate and test physical principles and report the results.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Marked written assignments, multiple choice tests and laboratory assessment.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? The module mark will be capped at 35% in cases where a student does not achieve a pass mark in the mandatory continuous assessment component of the module (i.e. continuous assessment mark of less than 40%).
• The pass standard is 40%, subject to a minimum mark of 40% in the mandatory continuous assessment component. The module mark will be capped at 35% in cases where a student does not pass the continuous assessment component of the module (ie. continuous assessment mark of less than 40%). Students who obtain an “E capped” mark who choose to re-sit the written exam in August cannot improve their module mark, which will remain capped at 35% (35% is within the compensation threshold). Students who obtain an “F capped” mark who choose to re-sit the written exam in August can improve their module mark to a maximum of 35%, ie. the module mark is capped at 35% (35% is within the compensation threshold).
• Penalties: Late submissions not accepted. There is no option to repeat the continuous assessment component of the module within the same period of study.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• There is an opportunity to re-sit the written examination within the same period of study, ie. Autumn. The continuous assessment mark is carried forward to the Autumn examination.
• University scheduled written examination (Autumn): 120 minutes, On-campus
