Courses / Module

• Articulate their experience of pupils with SEN and inclusive practice in (1) their own education as pupils and (2) as student teachers, and articulate their perception of desirable practice (following reflection and discussion)
• Identify the range and nature of current educational provision for pupils with special educational needs and debate the rationale for and potential merits of such provision
• Debate topical issues in special education e.g. Inclusion, enrolment policy etc.
• Identify the forms of support made available to pupils with SEN, to their parents and to their schools by the DES and government agencies
• Specify the respective roles and skills of teachers and other professionals who provide intervention to pupils with SEN
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Continuum of Support and the sequence of elements in the staged approach to intervention
• Be aware of how to devise a classroom support plan for a child who is presenting with additional difficulties in the classroom.
• Describe characteristics of this group of pupils; the teaching methodologies best suited to meeting their needs and the provision currently made for them in mainstream schools

• Lectures, assigned reading/workshops, direct instruction / questioning / discussion, demonstrations, guided research, experiential learning, field work, workshops, identified tasks designed to promote independent reading/research, class presentations, class debate and assessment.

• Continuous Assessment detail(s): Assignment.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Satisfactory attendance is a requirement of this module
