This module aims at developing students' competence in Mandarin Chinese further, building on the skills and knowledge acquired in CN151. It is, therefore, a continuing intensive, accelerated course in Chinese language and culture that is designed to provide a solid foundation for a degree programme in Chinese Studies. The course further develops students' confidence and accuracy when using Mandarin in a broad range of situations. It also continues to sensitise students to Chinese culture and society and further deepens their knowledge and understanding of them through various media (texts, images, videos, online). By the end of the module students will have acquired a vocabulary of around 200 Chinese characters and be able to express themselves in spoken and written Mandarin.
Core lectures are supported by language laboratory work and intensive language tutorials. Additional work with self-access material is also required.
This module is aligned to the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) at level 2, where the emphasis is on achieving a fundamental level of communication in all four skills, (listening, speaking, reading and writing). A student achieving an overall mark of 60% or higher in this module will have demonstrated linguistic competence commensurate with HSK level 2.
