Module ORGANOMETALLIC CHEMISTRY AND CATALYSIS

Module code: CH421
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Material covered in this module includes the following:

(i) Organometallic Chemistry: Definition of Organometallic complexes, The Eighteen Electron Rule, electron counting, oxidation state of d-Block organometallic compounds. MO (Molecular Orbital) theory applied to organometallic d-block complexes s-donor, pi-acceptor and pi-donor ligands. Examples of organic Ligands: alkyls, aryls, carbon monoxide, carbenes, alkenes, arenes and cyclopentadienyl rings. Back bonding and hapticity. Examples of d-block organometallic complexes e.g. metal carbonyls, Fischer and Schrock carbenes, metallocenes such as ferrocene. Examples of auxiliary ligands in d-block organometallics i.e. phosphines (Tolman cone angle and electronic parameter). Homogeneous catalysis; the steps involved in catalytic cycles; examples of catalytic cycles; alkene metathesis; Ziegler Natta polymerization. Examples of main group organometallic reagents and reactions that are important in synthesis e.g. Grignard reagents, alkyllithiums, and alkylaluminium.

(ii) Mechanistic aspects of the steps involved in the catalytic cycles of organometallic complexes. Oxidative addition and reductive elimination. Migratory insertion and de-insertion (e.g. ß-hydride elimination) reactions.
