Module HETEROCYCLIC CARBOHYDRATE AND PEPTIDE CHEMISTRY

Module code: CH326
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Heterocyclic chemistry, carbohydrate chemistry and amino acid/peptide chemistry.

This module covers three areas of organic chemistry:
(i) The chemistry of aromatic and saturated heterocyclic chemistry.
The material covered in this section includes an introduction to the structure and reactivity of pyridine and aromatic heterocycles, as well as stereoelectronics in saturated heterocycles; thermodynamics of ring formation and Baldwin's rules.

(ii) Carbohydrate chemistry. Material covered includes terminology, general reactions of aldoses and ketoses, chain extension and chain reduction, glycosides, disaccharides and polysaccharides

(iii) Amino acid and peptide chemistry. Material covered includes: amino acids - structure, functions, synthesis; peptide synthesis - protecting group strategies, coupling reagents; protein structure and function.
