Introduction to Molecular Pharmacology and Drug Action
This module examines fundamental aspects of the biomedical chemistry of drug action: (i) Molecular structure and function. Material covered includes protein structure and function, drug-target interactions, intermolecular forces and energy of binding, introduction to drug design and case studies.
(ii) Molecular pharmacology. Material covered includes an introduction to the pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic phases of drug action, classification of drug targets, molecular recognition and receptor models, modes of drug action, saturation binding curves and dose-response relationships, introduction to structure activity relationships and case studies.
