This module examines important analytical techniques such as:
(i) Chromatography: Material covered includes the theoretical principles of chromatographic separations, application of liquid chromatography, with emphasis on HPLC and on the specific chromatographic techniques used in downstream processing for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and protein purification, i.e. IEX, SEC, HIC, and affinity purification, the selection and optimisation of separation conditions, and detection methods.
(ii) NMR spectroscopy of organic molecules. Includes an introduction to the technique, and the concepts of how signal position, relative integration and coupling patterns in proton NMR spectroscopy can be interpreted to identify the carbon-hydrogen framework of an organic compound, and an introduction to both 13C NMR spectroscopy and 2-D spectroscopy.
(iii) Electrochemistry: Material covered includes conductivity, molar conductivity, limiting molar conductivity, ionic strength and the application of conductivity measurements in analytical chemistry. Next, the concept of an electrochemical cell and the cell potential are introduced.
