• Outline the differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
• Describe animal and plant cell structures, organelle function and the components and function of the Endomembrane and Cytoskeletal systems.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the connection between chemical composition and function in biological molecules and macromolecules.
• Describe the defining characteristics, structure and replication abilities of viruses, bacteria and fungi.
• Describe the dominant and recessive patterns of Mendelian inheritance.
• Demonstrate an understanding of the Central Dogma and the relationship between genes and proteins.
• Describe the processes driving evolution at the population level, including the process of speciation.

• Module Graded (numeric value) or Ungraded (Pass/Not Passed): Graded
• Continuous Assessment detail(s): To include some or all of the following components: Learning Outcome Assessments (weekly quizzes); Practical write-ups/workbooks; Self-Assessment Quizzes and Learnsmart Reading Assignments (Connect System); Writing Assignment. The scheduled exam format will be an MCQ-based exam.

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? The Resit Supplemental Continuous Assessment (see Autumn Supplementals below) is capped at 40% for students who fail to pass the CA during the term.
• Failure to attend and engage in the continual assessment component of this module could result in not passing this module.
• Penalties: Late submissions may be accepted but with penalties. See Marks and Standards section for detail.

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• Students that achieve a grade below 40% in their CA may be permitted to do supplemental exams and continuous assessment (over the summer). For this module, supplemental continuous assessment will consist of LearnSmart and writing assignments. Only those students who have officially registered to repeat/resit the exam in the autumn will be allowed to submit supplemental continuous assessment. Only those students who are deemed to have achieved a minimum level of engagement with the CA components throughout the module will be allowed to submit supplemental continuous assessment.
