1st year
- Either 15 credits of German (group 1 - only possible if you studied German in school to H5 Leaving Certificate or equivalent level) OR 30 credits of German (group 1 & 7 - if you are a beginner). If taking up German as a beginner it is advisable to attend all lectures from the first week of term.
- Plus choose up to 3 other subjects or Critical Skills from the 5 groups available (max 1 per group)
2nd & 3rd year
- German and 1 of your 1st year subjects as part of a Double Major or as a Minor
- Optional 10 credit Electives in 2nd year
- All students of German have the opportunity to spend the third year of their degree programme in a German speaking country. This might involve:
- studying at a university in Germany or Austria (Erasmus programme)
- assisting with English classes at a German school (ELA programme)
- teaching English to young children (Erasmus internship)
Students who avail of this opportunity can have this year recognised as part of their studies and thus convert their degree programme into a 4-year B.A.
International.
Students interested in teaching German should note that the Teaching Council of Ireland require all registered teachers of German to have spent a minimum of two months living in a German-speaking country. The Maynooth University School of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures advise at least a three-month residency.
