If you want to achieve a high level of competency in a modern European language, as well as learn about Spanish and Latin American culture and society more generally, studying Spanish as part of our BA degree is for you.

 

As a student of Spanish, you will have a twin focus on language and culture. Through language classes and with supporting material such as film, literature and cultural events, you will aim to become a fluent speaker and writer of Spanish. If you’re a beginner, you can take intensive language classes.

 

Over the course of your degree programme, you will receive an excellent grounding in all aspects of Spanish language through core modules in Spanish Grammar, Professional Spanish and Translation. In your second and final years you can choose from a broad range of optional modules, such as Linguistics, Spanish Literature and Cinema, Latin American Literature and Cinema, Catalan and Portuguese.

Mature students - Information:

A mature student is 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time degrees the mature age is 21. Admission is based on your application and/or interview. H5 Leaving Certificate Spanish or equivalent required if non-beginner.  H4 grade required from 2020.

If taking up Spanish as a beginner it is advisable to attend all lectures from the beginning of the semester.

Mature student applicants who have a disability 

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require examination support for any required written tests, please submit supporting documentation by 15 March 2019 to the Access Office. Unfortunately we are unable to consider applications for alternative examination accommodation after this deadline.

• Either 15 credits (group 5) of Spanish (if you studied Spanish in school to H5 Leaving Certificate or equivalent level) OR 30 credits (group 5 & 7) of Spanish (if you are a beginner) 
• Choose up to 3 other subjects (or Critical Skills) from the 5 groups available (max 1 per group)

• Spanish
• Continue with 1 of your 1st year subjects in a Double Major or as a Minor
• Optional 10 credit Electives in 2nd year

After 2nd year: as part of this programme, you will have the opportunity to spend a year studying at a Spanish-speaking university or working as a language assistant in a Spanish-speaking country (subject to availability).

Duration: 4 years BA (International) or 3 years (BA)
