	Details
	Mathematics is the logical and abstract study of pattern. It involves an interplay between the concrete and the abstract: the ever-changing world around us is one of the key inspirations for the invention and investigation of abstract mathematics, and the discoveries of abstract mathematics have important and unexpected applications in the world around us. The Department offers multiple programmes to suit a range of Mathematical backgrounds, from the intensive Pure Mathematics programmes, which are aimed at students with a strong interest in abstract mathematics and a flair for analytical reasoning, to the more applied programmes which appeal to students who enjoy the more concrete areas of the subject. Students concentrate on Mathematics (Pure) - learning how to think hard and rigorously about Mathematical questions; In the final two years, central areas of Mathematics such as Complex Analysis, Topology and Group Theory are studied in depth; Select from a range of courses in rapidly growing areas such as: Differential Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Probability, Statistics and Graph Theory; Develop the ability to invent, criticise and perfect new Mathematics for yourself and to solve new problems; Take Mathematics topics related to key developments in technology, software, economics and other applications.

Mathematics is the logical and abstract study of pattern. Entry requirements

	Additional information
	Leaving Certificate applicants are required to present (as a minimum): 2H5 & 4O6/H7 and O6/H7 in Irish, English, 3rd language. H2 Mathematics required. How to apply

Course structure

BA Bachelor of Arts Mathematics (Pure) - Double Major or Major/Minor.

As a Double Major BA degree Mathematics (Pure) is taken with 1 or 2 other Arts subjects which may include Critical Skills in first year

First year

30 credits of Mathematics (Pure) is taken with 1 or 2 other Arts subjects in first year (excluding groups 1 & 3)
Students require a mark of 50% or greater in first year Mathematics (Pure) to proceed to second year in Mathematics (Pure). Students attaining a mark below 50%, and who are eligible to proceed to second year, progress to second year Mathematical Studies, or progress with Statistics and other first year subject, or with the two other subjects you took in first year.

Second year

Mathematics (Pure) may be taken with another Arts subject, or it may be taken as a Major/Minor with the Arts subject or Statistics
Optional 10 credit Electives in 2nd year

Final year

In final year, Mathematics (Pure) is taken as a Single Major, on its own, or Major/ Minor or Double Major with your second year subject

Students may apply to study overseas after 2nd year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

In 1st year, Mathematics (Pure) is taken as a double subject (timetabled in groups 1 and 3) with one or two other Arts subjects excluding groups 1 and 3.
Admission to 2nd Arts Mathematics (Pure) (MT2DM or MT2MJ) is conditional on students obtaining a mark of 50% or better in the 1st year Mathematics (Pure) (MT1F30) examination.
1st year minimum entry requirement: Leaving Certificate (or equivalent) H2 Mathematics.
