Mature students - Information:

Mature student applicants are 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time degrees the mature age is 21. Admission is based on application and/or interview.

Apply to the CAO by February 1st 2022. Late applications from mature students may be accepted after this date - consult the Undergraduate Studies website for updates. Application may not be made to the CAO after May 1st 2022.

Mature students must complete the CAO section for mature applicants fully, indicating clearly past or current studies, and outlining educational goals and objectives. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the information provided on their CAO application form. All questions should be answered in full.

Mature student applicants who have a disability

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require examination support for any required written tests, please submit supporting documentation by 15 March 2022 to the Access Office. Unfortunately we are unable to consider applications for alternative examination accommodation after this deadline.

How to apply

Course structure

BA Bachelor of Arts – Law as a Double Major or as a Minor Law & 1 other subject to degree level.

First year

Either 15 (group 1) or 30 credits (group 1 & 7) of Law (if intending to move into the MH502 BCL degree in 2nd year, it is recommended that students take the 30 credit Law option)
Plus choose up to 3 other subjects (or Critical Skills) from the groups available

Second year

Continue with Law as part of a Double Major or as a Minor in the BA degree
Optional 10 credit Electives in second year
Students who attain 40% or higher in Law in 1st year (and pass their other subjects) may apply to transfer into second year of the BCL (Law and Arts) programme or second year of the 4 year LLB Law degree (if intending to move into one of these specialised degrees in second year, it is recommended that students take the 30 credit Law option in first year). Students who have taken Accounting, Business or Criminology may apply to transfer to 2nd year of the BCL Law and Accounting, Business or Criminology respectively. Only BCL and LLB graduates are recognised by the King’s Inns as eligible to sit their entrance examination for entry to the barristers’ profession.

Students may apply to study overseas after second year (on Erasmus or Study Abroad) and graduate with a BA (International) after 4 years. See the International Studies website for details.

Either 15 or 30 credits of Law.
If taking the 30 credit option: the extra 15 credits are timetabled outside of groups 1-6 so you may choose other subjects from groups 2-6.
Only one of these can be taken as a double subject since the extra 15 credits for each are taught at the same time: Anthropology, Computer Science, German (beginner), History, International Development, Law, Sociology, Spanish (beginner).

Students who have passed LW152 Contract Law in Year 1 cannot take LW259 Contract Law.
Students who only took 15 credits of Law in Year 1 and who did not take LW152 must take LW259.

	Career and postgraduate options
	Career options: Graduates of our LLB and BCL programmes (but not of the MH101 BA programme) will be in a position to take exams to enter professional training, either by sitting the Law Society of Ireland’s FE1 examinations for entry to the solicitors’ profession or the Honorable Society of King’s Inns’ Barrister-at-Law Degree entrance examination for entry to the barristers’ profession. Studying law also opens up a whole range of career options outside of being a lawyer such as journalism; policy development; business and finance; management consulting; the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) sector; and national and international public administration (such as at the EU or UN).
