This course requires 3 additional subjects Mature students - Information: Mature student applicants are 23 years or older by 1st January in the year of entry to the University. For part-time degrees the mature age is 21. Admission is based on application and/or interview. As a mature student applicant, if you are considering choosing Music as one of your Arts subjects in September 2022, we advise that you contact the Music Department in advance of your interview, to determine if you meet the standard required to study this subject (e.g. for school-leavers the minimum standard is Leaving Certificate H5 or equivalent). There is no QQI equivalent qualification for this minimum requirement to study Music.
Apply to the CAO by February 1st 2022. Late applications from mature students may be accepted after this date - consult the Undergraduate Studies website for updates. Application may not be made to the CAO after May 1st 2022.
Mature students must complete the CAO section for mature applicants fully, indicating clearly past or current studies, and outlining educational goals and objectives. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the information provided on their CAO application form. All questions should be answered in full.
Students have the option of studying either solo performance (subject to audition or certificate) or group piano tuition. BA students who have attained Grade 6+ (ABRSM, RIAM, Trinity College London) on a standard orchestral instrument (excluding percussion), piano, organ, classical guitar, voice or saxophone; Grade 6+ (Rockschool, Trinity College London) on bass, drums, vocals, keyboard or guitar (electric or acoustic); or who are traditional Irish musicians or musical theatre vocalists of comparable fluency, will also have an opportunity to take individual tuition in their instrument or voice.
Students who have not taken formal performance examinations are invited to audition, demonstrating Grade 6+ attainment, in September. Please see further details on the Department of Music website (link below). Alternatively, group piano tuition is an option open to all levels from absolute beginner to advanced. Where possible, the Department of Music arranges instrumental/vocal tuition on campus. Students can also choose to have instrumental/vocal tuition (funded to a maximum amount by the Department) at either TU Dublin or RIAM.
Mature student applicants who have a disability If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require examination support for any required written tests, please submit supporting documentation by 15 March 2022 to the Access Office. BA Bachelor of Arts – Music – Double Major, Major/Minor or as a Minor. Music and another subject to degree level. All students are required to present H5 in Leaving Certificate Music to study Music.

Career options: Choral director, church organist/director of music, music librarian, orchestral/session musician, composer/arranger are just some of the roles our graduates have found employment in. Graduates have also worked in the following fields: arts administration, multimedia, music industry, music journalism, music publicity and recording, radio production and presentation.
Music graduates gain skills and experience in communication, presentation and teamwork and have found careers in areas as diverse as management consultancy and information technology, where these skills are highly valued.
Both the BMus and BA degrees meet the Teaching Council’s Curricular Subject Requirements for Music (Post-Primary) for those applying for registration as post-primary teachers on/after 1 January 2017. In order to teach Music at second level, the Teaching Council require that the qualifying degree carries 80 ECTS credits. Music in the BA Degree meets all of the Teaching Council requirements as students take the additional credits in year 2.
