Description

In the BSc degree, you take four subjects in your first year, one of which is Mathematics;
  • You have three weeks at the beginning of term to choose your other three subjects;
  • In your first year you’ll also have the opportunity to study Critical Skills – this is an optional 15 credit course specifically focused on developing skills such as: analytical skills, the ability to deal with complex arguments, evaluating evidence and making balanced judgements, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly both verbally and in writing;
  • After first year you can choose progress in either a Double Major (taking two subjects equally to degree level), or a Single Major, where you take two subjects in third year and after that, specialise in one subject;
  • In your second year you’ll have the opportunity to take an Elective. This will give you the chance to study a topic from another subject area that you find especially interesting – it could be a topic like entrepreneurship, climate change, philosophy, programming, macroeconomics or even a new language like Mandarin Chinese.
  • You can decide at the end of 1st year what your preferred pathway is, when you are more familiar with the subjects and what they entail. Visit our Maynooth Education pages for details on the New Maynooth Education - Critical Skills, Electives, flexible pathways.
  • Students who wish to study abroad for one semester or one year, substituting this period of study abroad for part of their study at Maynooth, should contact the International Coordinator in their subject Department to see what options may be available to them.
