The aim of the PG Certificate in Geography is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and competence necessary to learn how to think critically from a geographical perspective. Students will be exposed to contemporary debates in Geography about pressing global, European and Irish issues, and learn specialist knowledge and competence in areas for which our Geographers are internationally recognised for, including political, environmental, urban, social, historical, health and cultural geography, as well as in climate change, GIS, remote sensing, and in other areas. Students will also be exposed to working with civil society and government partners, and develop their sense of the ethical and practical demands of such collaborative research.

The PG Certificate in Geography offers current and prospective educators that already have some background coursework in the discipline the possibility to earn the basic requirement of 15 credits of physical and 15 credits in human geography. For students seeking to teach Geography at secondary level, it is the student’s responsibility to check with the Irish Teaching Council about what specific requirements are needed. If students need to take 60 credits of postgraduate instruction in Geography, the Postgraduate Diploma (MHN64, MHN65) is the correct course to take.

The programme will be delivered through lecturers, seminars, fieldwork, practicals, other forms of experiential learning (in and out of the classroom) tied to taught masters courses in Geography. A wide selection of modules and flexibility in choice reflects the breadth of the discipline. The PG Certificate is flexible in delivery, innovative in emphasis, and stresses experiential- and field-based learning opportunities for students to develop employability competencies

The PG Certificate in Geography offers a wide-ranging programme of taught modules, delivered through lectures, seminars, fieldwork, and methods practicals. The degree structure includes 30 credits, taken over two semesters. Geography modules include five or ten credit modules, with 2-hour meetings a week for ten to twelve weeks. (There may be some slight variations in module format.) Modules include a range of pedagogical approaches and assessment types (academic essays, field research journals, applied research projects, mapping projects, blogs, vlogs, field-based reports, individual and group presentations, other).
