Criminology has been described as the ‘study of the making of laws, the breaking of laws and of society’s reaction to the breaking of laws’, signalling the three main branches that make up the subject. This degree is listed on the Schedule of Approved Degrees for entry to the barrister profession and graduates from the degree programme are eligible to sit the entrance examination to The Honorable Society of King's Inns, subject to the normal requirements.

At Maynooth, we offer a unique opportunity to study Criminology as part of a BCL core law degree or alternatively as part of a broad based Arts degree. No other University in the Republic of Ireland offers this opportunity.

You will gain perspectives from experts on explanations for criminal behaviour, criminological theory, the operation of the criminal justice system, the psychology of crime, the anthropology of crime, crime and economics and more. Choose Criminology in combination with other Arts subjects (including Law) in first year, and then focus on Criminology and Law in second and third year.

Many modules are run in partnership with civil society organisations, and law firms working in the criminal justice sphere. Our programmes have a strong career focus; during your studies you will be encouraged to put your knowledge and skills into practice by applying for work, placements and by volunteering. It’s not all work though; socialising is a key part of your Maynooth experience.

A year of study is 60 credits.

  • 15 credits of Criminology

  • Students who successfully complete the 1st year of the programme have the option of transferring into the 2nd year of the LLB programme (MH501).
