	Established in 1975, Maynooth University Department of Adult and Community Education is the only academic department that specialises in the education of adults in Ireland and it is at the forefront of teaching, training, research and development. The BA in Community Studies (Social Sciences) is specifically designed for adult students who are interested in pursuing a part-time evening degree. This flexible degree has been developed for people who are busy with work, family and daily life. If you are interested in history, politics, the environment, development, adult education, society and culture, and you have two free evenings a week, then this wide-ranging degree is for you. If you would like a deep understanding of the world around us and consider participation and critical engagement with the issues that face humanity over the coming century such as social justice, democracy and sustainability as providing a possibility to influence the present and the future, then you should consider the BA Community Studies. Students will have the opportunity to learn together through our Common Modules where history, geography, adult education, sociology and anthropology bring their unique disciplinary insights to bear on culture, society, landscape, politics and more.

Mature students - Information:

As this is a part-time degree, the minimum mature applicant age is 21. Admission is based on your application and/or interview.

Apply to the CAO by February 1st 2018. Late applications from mature students may be accepted after this date - consult the Undergraduate Studies website for updates. Application may not be made to the CAO after May 1st 2018.

Mature students must complete the CAO section for mature applicants fully, indicating clearly past or current studies, and outlining educational goals and objectives. Applicants are assessed on the basis of the information provided on their CAO application form. All questions should be answered in full.

Mature student applicants who have a disability

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty (e.g. dyslexia), and require examination support for the written tests, please submit supporting documentation by 1 March 2018 to the Access Office. Unfortunately we are unable to consider applications for alternative examination accommodation after this deadline.

	Career options: Community Studies students are often active at some level in the community and voluntary sector. Graduates of the BA Community Studies degree acquire knowledge and develop skills that are desirable in the statutory, community and voluntary sectors. Our graduates have progressed to work in the areas of adult and further education and training; adult literacy, community development, teaching, drug and alcohol services, civil service and Non-Governmental Organisations. Some graduates decide to proceed into postgraduate study in fields of interest such as education, guidance and counselling, citizenship, social inclusion and social cohesion, regeneration, narrative enquiry, gender studies, politics and sociology.
