Track 1: Primary Education
Note 1: Additional module ADT006 'ENGLISH LITERATURE AND LEARNING'
The Department of Education specifies minimum entry requirements that students must meet in in Maths, English and Irish in order to progress into Primary Teaching Initial Teacher Education. This is to ensure that primary teachers have the capacity to lead learning in these vital areas. The Think About Teaching course provides modules in Irish and Maths, that prepare students to meet these requirements. Students who are registered in the Primary Stream (ITE1) but who do not have the Leaving Cert English entry requirement (O4 or H7), will also be required to complete the additional 10 credit module ADT006: English Literature and Learning. Please note that the mark achieved for ADT006 will not contribute to the overall grade for ITE1- Primary Education. It will however be included on an academic transcript. Students should contact the course co-ordinator for further details on how to register.
Note 2: Progression thresholds to Primary Teaching Degrees in Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education and Bachelor of Arts (MH101)
(i) The progression threshold to the Bachelor of Education (MH001)/Professional Masters in Education: Primary Teaching is 60% overall in the ITE1 stream, and a minimum of 50% grade in the Cumas na Gaeilge Module (LC004).
(ii) The progression threshold from ITE1 to Bachelor of Arts (MH101), Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Teaching and Learning (MH003, full time) Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Teaching and Learning (MH801 part-time) directly is 60% grade overall in the ITE1 Stream, or 55%+ and an interview which is undertaken by the MU Admissions Office.
Track 2: Secondary Education (Science & Maths)

The progression threshold to MH212 is 60% overall in the ITE2 stream. MH212 comprises three streams, which students with the necessary entry requirements can progress to:
By choosing the MH212 degree you will have a range of options open to you after four years. Having studied Science and Education for four years you are awarded a BSc Science (with Education) degree - a level 8 honours degree. You can decide to exit the programme at this stage or stay on for one more year of postgraduate study which will result in the Level 9 Professional Master of Education degree. This extra year is required in order to meet the Teaching Council requirements to be registered as a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT) in two subjects.
