This course will give participants a practical grounding in the writing of fiction and creative non-fiction for publication. The course allows students to work with professional writers who will act in an advisory capacity. The practical emphasis will help students to progress towards producing work of publishable standard and marketing it.

The development of critiquing and editing skills are essential for creative writing. Student interaction and engagement with each other’s work guided by experienced writers and lecturers is aimed to provide a supportive environment for the development of these skills.The course is open both to students who are beginning their creative writing journey and students with prior experience of creative writing in some capacity.

• Understand the techniques of writing creative non-fiction and have cultivated a disciplined approach to writing.
• Critically assess your own and others’ work.
• Research a topic to form the basis of a short piece of writing
• Differentiate between the structural demands of writing for non-fiction, short story and the novel.
• Write a short story or stories demonstrating competence in at least one of the following areas: descriptive prose, plot, characterisation, dialogue
• Prepare a synopsis and submission letter for a piece of work for the purpose of publication
• Write a novel excerpt of approximately 4,000 words showing understanding of premise, time and place and character styles.
• display a basic understanding of the economics and structure of the publishing industry.
