	Overview
	This module builds on its counterpart in Year 1 by exploring further aspects of, and approaches to, social work theory, with a particular emphasis on those that (a) relate to contemporary developments in social theory more generally and (b) directly inform anti-oppressive practice. The commitment of social work to social justice and human rights is developed with a focus on the philosophy of rights and the multifaceted nature of power. As in Year 1, emphasis will be placed on the integrative understanding of social science theories and concepts, including psychological and sociological perspectives on human agency and social structure. - Contemporary critical social issues and their implications for social work practice. - The philosophy of rights; natural, social and discursive approaches. - Power and/in social work � multidisciplinary perspectives. - Equality, diversity and social work (specific issues and identities; intersectionality).

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe and discuss how social work theory informs social work practice, with specific reference to individual theories. Relate key developments in contemporary society and contemporary social theory to social work theory and practice. Give a critical account of the operation of power in diverse social work contexts. Apply rights and equality frameworks to the situation of specific groups experiencing disadvantage and oppression, and to the experience of intersectionality. Locate and analyse their own personal experience in the context of the module�s content.
