This module introduces social work skills and methods and how these relate to different areas of practice. Students are introduced to the diversity of context in social work practice.

On completion of this module, students will understand social work as a process that involves a number of stages, typically described as assessment, planning, intervention, reflection and evaluation. This module will appraise the strengths and weaknesses of various methods and will explore how each reflects the values and principles of social work.

Given their centrality to social work practice and the range of approaches that can be adopted, counselling and engagement skills and group work skills feature in both years of the programme. Teaching and learning methods will facilitate the integration of theory and practice. This module will include skills development in small group classes.
