This module comprises of two components, social policy and law for social workers. It focuses in detail on selected areas of social work law and of social policy, paying attention to the ways in which the professional practitioner’s knowledge of law and policy supports all aspects and stages of the social work process.

The first component of this module builds students’ knowledge of social policy as it is developed and implemented in Ireland and Europe. It includes an overview of the policy-making and legislative processes and the relevant institutional and administrative frameworks, while also enabling students to adopt a critically informed perspective on social and public policy. The module focuses specifically on the key policies which underpin the sectors in which social workers are employed.
- Social policy for social work: theories and concepts of social policy development and implementation and how they relate to social work practice.

The second component provides students with an in-depth knowledge of law relevant to the practice of social work, with particular reference to child and family law. It also considers the ways in which social work practice is influenced or determined by (and in turn interacts with) the policy and legal contexts. Content of this component includes the following:
- The constitutional, institutional and administrative frameworks for the law and for policy in Ireland, and the relevant international dimensions (EU, CoE, UN).
- Law for social work practice: the legal basis for social work; social workers and legal proceedings.
- Law in relation to children and family breakdown; child protection; children in care; adoption; family law; domestic violence.
