This module will introduce you to literary translation theories and strategies. You will look at different approaches to specific issues by engaging with theoretical studies and analysing a range of published translated literary texts. More specifically, you will evaluate how the strategies used by translators might vary depending on different constraints, like genre conventions; the authorís style; the function of the target text and its audienceís expectations; and any ideological messages implied in the text. In each case, you will be encouraged to discuss any translation challenges posed by the source text; to identify the translatorís strategies; and to evaluate their approach critically by engaging with appropriate theories.
