Module TRANSLATING HISPANIC TEXTS AND CONTEXTS

Module code: SPA616
Credits: 10
Semester: 2
Department: SPANISH
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Paul McAleer (SPANISH)
Overview Overview

This module will introduce you to literary translation theories and strategies. You will look at different approaches to specific issues by engaging with theoretical studies and analysing a range of published translated literary texts. More specifically, you will evaluate how the strategies used by translators might vary depending on different constraints, like genre conventions; the author’s style; the function of the target text and its audience’s expectations; and any ideological messages implied in the text. In each case, you will be encouraged to discuss any translation challenges posed by the source text; to identify the translator’s strategies; and to evaluate their approach critically by engaging with appropriate theories.
