Module LIVING IN SPANISH-SPEAKING CULTURES: PREPARING FOR THE YEAR ABROAD

Module code: SPA228
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: SPANISH
International: No
Coordinator: Dr Mercedes Carbayo Abengozar (SPANISH)
Overview Overview

This module aims to prepare students for the Year Abroad by providing them with the relevant information about the Erasmus, International and ELA programmes and by equipping them with the necessary tools to successfully complete their year abroad. Students will engage with concepts such as ‘identity’ 'culture', 'interculturality' and 'intercultural communicative competence', while also being introduced to a corpus of scholarly research on living and working abroad within a year abroad context. The aim is to assist students with their choices and to help them to manage their expectations at both academic and personal level. Because of its wide scope, this is a module aimed at both students planning to go abroad during their studies and at a further stage, as it intends to widen knowledge about Spanish and Latin American language and cultures. Although the contents of this module will follow an applied approach, an emphasis will be placed not only on language practice but also on structural language analysis in relation to the year abroad and Spain and Latin America. Additionally, students will be exposed to the closely lived experiences of Spain and Latin America from final year students, who have recently returned from Spain and Latin America. This module will, therefore, provide students with relevant tools for dealing with practical matters upon arrival as well as assisting them in generating a critical awareness of the key learning experiences of the period abroad.
