	Overview
	This module will consider the short story form as it has evolved in Latin America from the time of the European conquest and colonization of the region up to the present day. The course will consider indigenous myths, impressions of first Spanish settlers, and how these representations have continued to influence Latin America�s rich short story tradition. It will also consider how more recent short fictions have aimed to engage with contemporary political and social issues facing the region.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify key issues in the development of the short story genre in Latin America. Describe different types of short stories. Critique and evaluate short stories with reference to theories such as the fantastic and detective fiction. LO6 Write an essay or essays, making convincing arguments based on the reading of primary and secondary material.

Attendance for this module is monitored regularly. If attendance falls below 70% of session hours, the mark will be capped at 35% for this module. This module condition will not be applied to repeat examinations. Absence owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the missed class and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
Penalties: Late submission of assessed course work or examination materials will result in a reduction of the original grade by 5% (5 marks) per day. Assessed course work or examination materials will normally have to be submitted electronically through Turnitin. Late submission of work owing to medical or other compelling reasons is not penalised. The reason must be established in writing prior to, or immediately (i.e. not more than two working days) after the relevant submission deadline and evidence provided (normally such evidence would be a Medical Certificate).
