This module includes critical review of the evolution of child and family policies, assessing the implications for contemporary policies and strategies. These national responses are placed in the context of international obligations to children and families. Focusing on aspects of contemporary child and family policies in Ireland, the module will consider such issues as child poverty, child protection, alternative care and the needs and treatment of children from outside the jurisdiction. The broader context of family life for children is highlighted via such scenarios as living in lone-parent households and domestic violence situations. The module will draw on an extensive evidence-base of research and literature to augment policy and discourse analysis.
